HIV/AIDS Prevention Collectives in Western Kenya

Google Tech Talk (more info below) August 17, 2011 Presented by Chas Salmen. ABSTRACT What do foreign fish species, solar-powered Internet, and social networking have to do with solving the HIV/AIDS crisis in Western Kenya? Chas will address this question and others in his tech talk. Microclinic International and the Organic Health Response (OHR) have partnered to spread "contagious health" solutions among the remote populations of Lake Victoria in Western Kenya through an indigenous network of HIV/AIDS prevention collectives. Chas Salmen, the OHR-MCI HIV/AIDS Initiative Director, will speak about the Ekialo Kiona Center on Mfangano Island, which features a solar-powered computer center, VCT, and clinic rooms. Speaker Info: Chas Salmen is a medical anthropologist and UCSF medical student. He has worked extensively in Western Kenya as a training community mobilizer with AMPATH (Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS), conducted fieldwork as an ethnographer to the Oxford Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, and founded the Organic Health Response. He currently works as the OHR-MCI HIV/AIDS Initiative Director, a project sponsored by Google's Corporate Giving Council. He has received many honors and awards including the Rhodes Scholarship to study Medical Anthropology at Oxford.
