They also use products, such as Kafka and Kubernetes, or databases, such as YugabyteDB, Cassandra, MongoDB, and Neo4j, that are distributed by nature. Because these distributed systems are inherently stateful systems, enterprise architects and developers need to be prepared for all the things that can and will go wrong when data is stored on multiple servers--from process crashes to network delays and unsynchronized clocks. "Patterns of Distributed Systems" describes a set of patterns that have been observed in mainstream open-source distributed systems. Studying the common problems and the solutions that are embodied by the patterns in this guide will give you a better understanding of how these systems work, as well as a solid foundation in distributed system design principles. * Book description: © O'Reilly: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/patterns-of-distributed/9780138222246 TIMECODES 00:00 Intro 00:47 A patterns-based exploration 10:37 Should every SW Dev understand distributed systems? 15:07 Comparing patterns: Raft vs Paxos 33:00 Why are patterns useful? 37:10 Why do patterns remain underutilized? 39:39 Outro RECOMMENDED BOOKS Unmesh Joshi • Patterns of Distributed Systems • https://amzn.to/430yJ5G Darnell, Harrison & Seldess • CockroachDB: The Definitive Guide • https://amzn.to/3nL8YCC Guy Harrison • Next Generation Databases • https://amzn.to/3IoK5WL Burns, Beda & Hightower • Kubernetes: Up & Running • https://amzn.to/3sueuuI Jez Humble & Dave Farley • Continuous Delivery • https://amzn.to/3ocIHwd https://twitter.com/GOTOcon https://www.linkedin.com/company/goto- https://www.instagram.com/goto_con https://www.facebook.com/GOTOConferences #DistributedSystems #Patterns #CockroachDB #Kubernetes #ApacheKafka #YugabyteDB #MongoDB #Cassandra #Neo4j #CloudNative #Cloud #Programming #Raft #Paxos #UnmeshJoshi #JamesLewis #Thoughtworks #BookClub CHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUS Join this channel to get early access to videos & other perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs_tLP3AiwYKwdUHpltJPuA/join Looking for a unique learning experience?
