How to avoid common pitfalls with modern microservices testing by Eric Deandrea & Holly Cummins
About this talk
Have you ever wondered why your microservices break in production after all the tests have passed during CI/CD? Have you ever wondered if you’re testing too much or too little? If you want to learn about common pitfalls and how to catch them at build time rather than at runtime, this session is for you! In this session we’ll share some common battle scars from our experiences in the field. Additionally, we will introduce the testing pyramid and explain why it is important in helping to continuously deploy microservices independently without fear. We will demonstrate, through a test-driven development approach, how the combination of Pact contract testing combined with Quarkus developer joy can help prevent your microservices from breaking in production. HOLLY CUMMINS Holly Cummins is a Senior Principal Software Engineer on the Red Hat Quarkus team. Before joining Red Hat, Holly was a long time IBMer. In her time at IBM, Holly has been a full-stack javascript developer, a WebSphere Liberty build architect, a client-facing consultant, a JVM performance engineer, and an innovation leader. During her time in the IBM Garage, Holly led projects for enormous banks, tiny startups, and everything in between. Holly has used the power of cloud to understand climate risks, count fish, help a blind athlete run ultra-marathons in the desert solo, and invent stories (although not at all the same time). Holly is also a Java Champion, author, and regular keynote speaker. You can follow her on twitter at @holly_cummins or at hollycummins.com. ERIC DEANDREA Eric Deandrea is a Senior Principal Developer Advocate at Red Hat, focusing on application development technologies. Eric has over 20 years of experience designing and building Java-based solutions and developer training programs for the financial services and insurance industries. He is also a contributor to various Open Source projects, including Quarkus and Spring. Eric recently put his Quarkus and Spring knowledge to use by publishing his first book, “Quarkus for Spring Developers.” He enjoys using DevOps-focused automation technologies to make life easy. Outside of work, Eric enjoys boating on the lakes of New Hampshire, ice hockey, and martial arts, in which he holds a black belt in Kempo Karate. ------------------------------------------------------------ INTRO * visuals & editing by @Mercator * music : Avocado by Ephixa
