They are the bridge between a human readable piece of code and the ones and zeros our computers love to consume. In a compiler pipeline the code undergoes several transformations and analyses in order to produce the binary we want. We'll get a bird's eye view of the steps that we typically see in compilers as well as follow a piece of code through the pipeline to witness the transformations first hand: From parsing to code generation, with a little bit of optimization sprinkled on top!
