Wish you were here: stories of building a remote development IDE - Matt Ellis - NDC Sydney 2022

About this talk

Working from home is here to stay, so your IDE needs to work remotely, too. But how do you take an IDE platform that you’ve spent the last 21 years building, split it in half, run part of it on a remote server, and the rest on a laptop? That’s what JetBrains have just done with Gateway, the remote development feature in all JetBrains IDEs, such as Rider, IntelliJ IDEA and WebStorm. Oh, and the same team built Code With Me, for collaborative editing. What’s their secret sauce? Let’s not bother with the marketing, let’s just look at the fun stuff - how it works. We’ll dive into the architecture and found out how to solve the problem of running an IDE remotely, but interact with it like a local application. And how does collaborative editing fit into all of this? How do you create an IDE that multiple editors can use, all at the same time?
