Whistleblowing - reporting another person’s unethical behaviour - is one of the last stigmas of the workplace. In a business world where it is finally possible to be yourself, it is still taboo to talk about blowing the whistle. As with any taboo or stigma, if you don’t talk about it, you just reinforce it. When you don’t talk about it, there won’t be progress, and the current situation is not very bright. Most people who should whistleblow do not, and if they do most cases are not properly treated, and most whistleblowers suffer negative consequences. So let’s start conversations about whistleblowing so that we see less unethical behaviour in the workplace, more reporting and a better treatment of whistleblowing cases and whistleblowers. In this talk, I am going to share how I aged 5+ years and quit my job after whistleblowing in an environment where whistleblowing was not talked about. I will suggest topics of conversations that I believe will prevent you and people you care about from having to go through the same bad experience. My goal is to enable you to talk about whistleblowing. So you will get facts and figures, you will get information about the barriers to whistleblowing, and maybe even a piece of code.
