Learnings from the Enterprise-level Kubernetes transformation at Elkjøp Nordic - Fredrik Klingenberg

Modernizing infrastructure has been compared to changing tires while driving. Elkjøp Nordic didn’t just switch hosting model but re-engineered their whole sales infrastructure on the fly. This talk is about the introduction of Kubernetes(K8s) as an Enterprise platform that touches each customer and sale in every channel. We zoom in particularly on the 200+ Microservices that are custom developed in-house and drive all aspects of the business today. To cope with the challenges and increase the pace of feature iteration and reduce costs, Elkjøp Nordic transformed their application from running on Azure App Service with .NET to be more Cloud Native with .Net Core and K8s amongst others. A small team led by Henry Hagnäs Elkjøp single-handedly built the new platform while rapidly onboarding themselves and their developers. We early on defined some guiding principles for choosing amongst all the CNCF technology and keeping us safe from accidental mistakes. We introduced GitOps for centrally managing the state and handling disaster recovery with ease. Linkerd as a tool for security and aspect-oriented programming. We leaned heavily on the use of metrics for monitoring, alerting, and the missing link between management and developers.
