A Viral Map About a year ago, Laura Trump tweeted a U.S. electoral map from 2016, a familiar sea of red that implies America itself is Republican. Over the top of it, the caption read, “Try to impeach this”. I had to repair what I considered to be a data visualisation crime. I created a transition from her map to a more accurate representation, which depicted the actual count of red and blue votes in counties across the nation as simple circles, their size proportional to the number of votes. It went viral straight away, once during the impeachment of Trump and a second time during the 2020 US election. This talk will explain how this map came to be and provide possible reasons about why it went so viral.
