Narrating a Nation Through Numbers: India in Pixels The field of data viz is West-centric. As provocative as the statement is, it also is optimistic because it means there is a lot of room for others to join. Growing up, I was fascinated with maps but could not see my experience as an Indian reflected in the stories being told in international mapping communities - it mattered because I knew India is more nuanced than just being a populated mess of a nation without toilets. So I went from "Why is nobody making an India centric map community" to "Why am I not making an India centric map community"? India in Pixels is the story of building a community, of exploring the Identity of a nation that is still struggling to define her identity. In my talk, I will share my human story of how data viz became a tool for me to connect with my national identity and help ponder over complex issues of my country and myself. ----------------------- The Data Visualization Society fosters a community where every member benefits from resources that support growth, refinement, and expansion of data visualization knowledge regardless of expertise level.
